Although common oregano naturally occurs in northern Europe, it was widely used by Greeks and Romans in antiquity. Guelder was already known to Aristotle, Hippocrates and Dioskurdes. Later, Paracelsus and Lonicerus wrote about it, among others. It is currently known not only in the Mediterranean countries, but is used all over the world.

Oregano oil is traditionally used to improve digestion, respiratory and immune function and due to its antioxidant properties. It contains phenolic compounds, carbohydrate and thymol, which according to scientists are responsible for the beneficial properties of oregano. It was found that carvacrol and thymol inhibit the growth of various bacteria and fungi and may be helpful in maintaining a proper balance of intestinal microflora and proper digestion.

Oregano has strong antioxidant properties and in one of the studies it was even found that it is 42 times more active than apples. This is due to the synergistic action of phenolic compounds, in particular rosmarinic acid, which is also responsible for the antioxidant properties of rosemary. Other natural components of the oregano oil are between other triterpenoids, such as oleanolic acid, sterols, beta-carotene and vitamin C.
