Shilajit is a natural biological substance from the Himalayas. It is usually secreted during hot weather, appearing in dry places, sheltered from the wind and sun, on rocks composed mainly of limestone granites.

Mumio contains inorganic and organic compounds (products of hydrocarbon transformation, petroleum products) and plant remains (including mulberry and juniper), algae and lichen, which, getting into the cracks of rocks, create dead organic matter. It has the form of lumps or crystals with the consistency of tar or resin. It ranges in color from yellowish brown to brown to black. The word mumio in Greek means I protect, I cleanse.
