Green-lipped mussel (Perna canaliculus) is a crustacean native to New Zealand waters. It is distinguished by a green stripe along the edge of the shell. Mussel is used in traditional herbalism, as well as as a modern dietary supplement.

Valuable glycosaminoglycans

The properties of mussels are largely due to the glycosaminoglycans contained in it, which are polysaccharides. They are carbohydrate molecules composed of long chains of smaller monosaccharides (simple sugars) linked by glycosidic bonds.
